Red Buckeye (Aesculus pavia) is a striking, clump-forming native shrub or small tree renowned for its brilliant tubular red flowers that bloom in early spring, making it a top favorite for hummingbirds and native pollinators. Reaching 10 to 20 feet tall and wide, it thrives best in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, rich, well-drained soils, though it tolerates a wide range of conditions including heavy clay (USDA Zones 5–9). Its dark green foliage emerges early in spring, followed by smooth brown buckeye seeds housed in rounded husks by autumn. Compact and low-maintenance, it is an ideal focal specimen for rain gardens, native woodland borders, and pollinator gardens.
