American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a versatile, multi-stemmed native shrub prized for its edible nuts and dense, vibrant autumn foliage. Growing 8 to 16 feet tall and 8 to 13 feet wide, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and adapts well to a wide range of soil types, including well-drained loams, heavy clays, and poor, dry soils (USDA Zones 4–9). Spring brings long, showy male catkins before the leaves emerge, followed by small, sweet hazelnuts encased in papery husks by late summer that feed both wildlife and humans. Low-maintenance and drought-tolerant once established, it is an ideal choice for naturalized borders, windbreaks, native hedges, and wildlife gardens.
