Protect our Pollinators
Voice for the Trees
Our TreeKeepers are a specialized volunteer group trained to protect and plant trees in our neighborhoods.
Background
In November of 2019, Asheville GreenWorks partnered with the City of Asheville, Davey Tree and NASA Development to release a
Climate Change and Urban Canopy study for the City of Asheville
Data showed that Asheville had lost 891 acres of trees in 10 years
The majority of these trees were lost in low to moderate income areas
The study looked at 10 years of satellite data throughout the City of Asheville and included parameters such as:
Temperature
Albedo
LMI (Low to Moderate Income Levels)
Tree canopy coverage 2010 census
Impervious surfaces
Neighborhood TreeKeeper Responsibilities
Support GreenWorks Tree Nursery and public tree plantings
Communicate with communities about tree canopy loss and future plantings
Establish a map of public tree planting locations
Support GreenWorks' annual Tree Giveaways
Educate the public on urban forestry best practices
Assist with trainings and orientations when needed
Look after and care for trees at GreenWorks' various community orchards
Motivate and encourage neighborhood residents to plant more tree and to maintain current trees
Serve as the "eyes and ears" for trees in their communities
