Tire Amnesty Days Return to Sears

11/8/2016

Picture
In 2015, Asheville GreenWorks staffers and volunteers collected a record number of tires at Tire Amnesty Days – a free tire collection event for Buncombe County residents that takes place twice a year in spring and fall.

A typical tire collection brings in 800 tires – about one tractor trailer full. At the November 2015 event, additional trailers were called in from Biltmore Iron and Metal Company (BIMCO) to handle the overwhelming response of 2,455 tires residents dropped off to be hauled away and recycled, free of charge. This year’s event, to be held on November 12 and 13 at the Sears on Tunnel Road in Asheville, is prepared to receive even more tires. In partnership with Buncombe County and the North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality, GreenWorks will provide five trailers with the capacity to collect 5,000 tires.

Moving 5,000 tires and arranging them to fit in the trailers is a huge task. Lending some muscle to the event will be members from CrossFit Pisgah and Hard Exercise Works gyms.

Buncombe County residents can bring tires on or off rim to the Sears side parking lot on Tunnel Road, 10:00am to 5:00pm on Saturday and Sunday, November 12 and 13, 2016.

Tire Amnesty Days are just one way GreenWorks keeps Asheville and Buncombe County clean and green. With support from a Buncombe County Service Foundation grant and partnerships with businesses and agencies including BIMCO, Open Box Moving Company, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Curbie, Snake, Rabbit and Snail Bookmobile, Asheville Humane Society and Blue Ridge Biofuels, GreenWorks hosts Hard to Recycle events throughout the county five times a year.

The next Hard 2 Recycle event will be held on Saturday, November 19th, in South Buncombe County. Check the GreenWorks website www.ashevillegreenworks.org for more information about the event, including what materials will and will not be accepted.
