It was a busy Memorial Day weekend for our Volunteers. We planted hundreds of trees, cleaned up a damaged creek and collected 851 tires to be recycled. ![]() Shiloh Tree Planting - May 24th Through a generous grant from The Ramble Charitable Fund, we planted 17 trees in and around Linwood Crump - Shiloh Community Rec Center in Historic Shiloh Neighborhood. We planted Dogwoods, River Birches and Sycamores. Big thanks to Edwards Landscaping for helping with the planting plan - trees and with the site prep. Ph (828) 230-3864 ![]() Tire Amnesty Days - May 25th & 26th Free to-the-public tire collection, sponsored by Walmart, Sears, Jan Davis Tire and Signarama of Asheville. We accepted 851 tires from the general public over the weekend. At the same time, GWorks Volunteers cleaned up 7 - illegal tire dump sites throughout the area. These tires will be recycled into new products by Liberty Tire Recycling in Concord NC. ![]() French Broad Challenge Triathlon - May 26th Bike - Boat - Run race held by Glory Hound Events and part of the Mountain Sports Festival. Our Volunteers were invited to marshal the race to receive a donation from Glory Hound to further our environmental cleanup efforts. ![]() Paddle Planting - Hominy Creek May 27th Volunteers spent Memorial Day paddling and planting native trees back on the damaged banks of the Hominy Creek. We started at the top of the Hominy Creek Greenway at the junction of Buttermilk Creek and Hominy and worked our way to the French Broad. We planted: Wild Cherries, Bur Oaks, Maples, Redbuds and Walnuts. Along the way, we pulled out quite a bit of trash from the water including; 1 Ingles shopping cart, 12 tires and 4 bags of trash. Seniors from North Buncombe High School will tackle this same stretch of creek May 29th to further the cleanup.
