Food Tree Project Expands in Candler

12/14/2014

CANDLER - Through a grant from the Buncombe County Parks & Recreation Department, GWorks volunteers are in the process of a major expansion at the Sand Hill Community Orchard. Over the last 2 days we've graded the orchard, built a mulch pit, constructed the compost education area, created signage and planted ten (large) 2-inch caliper apple trees.

The goal behind our community orchards is to provide fresh, free fruit to the surrounding community, create green spaces and promote urban agriculture.

Upcoming projects: (January - Feb 2015)
  • Building fencing around the 20 cubic yard mulch pit
  • Constructing & painting the 8X8 work shed
  • Establishing the "Blueberry Patch" (30 plants)
  • Weeding / mulching, mowing the planting rows
  • Building climbing fences for the Raspberries & Blackberries
  • Creating informational signage
  • Installation of new native fruit trees and shrubs

About the Sand Hill Community Orchard

This orchard was established in 2013 through our Food Tree Project as an experiment to test the feasibility of installing the first large scale free-to-the-public fruit and nut orchard in the County.
Through this initial planting we were able to understand the micro-climate of the area and which plant species will thrive without a great deal of volunteer intervention. We do not use sprays, pesticides or artificial fertilizers in our orchards, just blood, sweet and tears.
Come out for a visit!

The Sand Hill Community Orchard is open to the public and located at the entrance to the Buncombe County Sports Complex in Candler: 24 Apac Drive, Candler NC 28715

Visitors and volunteers are always welcome.
