PUBLIC HEALTH WARNING - FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Dec 8th 2014

Asheville GreenWorks has detected raw sewage containing human feces being piped directly into the Reed Creek along the Reed Creek Greenway. The issue has been reported to Buncombe County Health and Human Services to investigate. For the time being, we're asking everyone using the Reed Creek Greenway to please stay out of the creek. For the safety of your pets, please don't allow them to venture into the water until this situation is resolved. We will continue to send out updates as they're available.

For more information, please contact: [email protected]

If you know of someone piping sewage or greywater directly into a waterway, you can file the report discreetly by phoning: 828-250-5971 or by visiting the County's Website:

I used to walk my dog along the Reed Creek Greenway and he loved to play in the water. All that was stopped because I was bothered by too much by the trash, including broken bottles in the Creek, as well as this particular homeless person who had set up his base there, and used the area as his toilet. Not only the stench of urine, but he had one day left a pile of feces right in the middle of the ground near the Creek. By this time I was carrying gloves and trash bags to clear all the trash around, and out of compassion for people/animals who come by, I cleaned up his 'poop'. I did not know who I should contact or complain about it, so I am so glad a friend of mine forwarded me your newsletter. After the unpleasant task of cleaning someone's feces, I stopped going to Reed Creek completely, and the area I am specifically talking about it, is near the bench that is located next to the Creek, where the entrance to the pathway is from the Gas Station located on Broadway (CITI I think). Also, another concern is, there are unsavoury characters, drinking beer near this specific spot (accessible from the gas station side) and then wants to make conversation and play with my dog. I had to switch to a different area to walk my dog after experiencing this several times...and of course a complete stop after the feces incident. Thank you all volunteers for the wonderful job you are doing. Much appreciate it. Thank you

I have to agree with the commenter above, this place used to be a great spot to cruise for gay hook-ups and now it is ruined by sewage and unsavory types that don't understand privacy. Where else am i to go to find a good casual sex hook up now that the sewage flows? These greenways were always a perfect spot to look for young men and now I have to use craigslist =/
