Tops for Shoes receives August Environmental Excellence Award

Occupying nearly half a block In the heart of downtown Asheville, Tops for Shoes is well-known to residents and visitors alike. It receives our August Environmental Excellence Award for outstanding flowers and street cleanup.

Downtown residents beautifying Pritchard Park

Downtown residents led by Mary Ann West and Trina Mullen have transformed downtown Pritchard Park into a garden. Writing to the Citizen-Times this month, Asheville resident Kim MacQueen awards them an “A” grade for their efforts:

Thanks to the efforts of these two, Asheville’s “other downtown park” now boasts beautiful planters, flowering plants, a hosta garden, a welcoming feel — and a support organization, The Friends of Pritchard Park.

On any given afternoon, you’ll see downtown workers enjoying an outdoor lunch, young mothers watching their children enjoy the park and several readers — quite a cry from Pritchard Park a year ago… This is a true private-public partnership that we can all enjoy.



Celebrating Arbor Day in Merrimon Square

2010 marked the 30th year of Asheville being part of the Tree City USA program. To celebrate Arbor Day, local residents turned out in Merrimon Square, planting trees and taking trees home to plant in their yards.
