Roadside and River Cleanups

Looking for a way to make an instant difference in your neighborhood? Grab a group of friends, or just yourself, and pick up litter around your community. You’ll improve your surroundings and set a great example for others.

We will supply you with garbage bags, safety vests, litter pickers, and gloves. Let us know where you have left the bags and we will have them picked up in a timely manner.  Contact volunteer@ashevillegreenworks.org or call 828-254-1776

For larger cleanups, we can arrange for the use of a sway car (type of dumpster) from the City.  Please call well in advance of your cleanup to secure “ole rusty” for your event.

The Great Asheville-Buncombe Cleanup
Help us clean up Buncombe County for spring! For the month of April we organize many cleanups as well as events to raise awareness of the importance of cleaning up our environment.

River and Stream Cleanups

Our Volunteers are working hard to keep the rivers and streams in Buncombe County free of litter.  Working 12 months a year, Volunteer groups are wading the waterways to eliminate trash from the environment.  Keeping the banks of the rivers and streams free and clear of garbage is just as important as wading the waterways.  Every time we receive a rain storm, more trash from the banks will make their way into the water table.

The North Carolina Big Sweep River Cleanup 2009
On October 10th, 2009, Asheville GreenWorks headed up a fleet of rafts, canoes and volunteers to clean up our beautiful French Broad River. At this annual cleanup we collected 3,440 pounds of trash, 2,580 pounds of tires and large debris and 380 pounds of recyclables from over 12 miles of river.

If you wish to clean up a waterway on your own, please contact us for safety tips! We would also love to hear from you afterwards to know how much debris you removed.  Please contact volunteer@ashevillegreenworks.org or call 828-254-1776

Asheville GreenWorks, an affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, is a volunteer-based organization working to achieve a clean and green Asheville and Buncombe County through community organizing, educating and environmental stewardship.
