Environmental Education

We achieve our mission of a clean and green Asheville and Buncombe County not only through our hands-on projects, but also through educational programs.

If you’ve lived in Asheville / Buncombe for the last 38 years, then you may recognize one of our characters “Caty Cleanup“.  From 1976 to 1997, Caty educated scores of children on the merits of Cleaning up Litter, Tree Planting, Environmental Stewardship and the 3-R’s (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle)

Today, we have Caty Cleanup’s Niece Allie Green to carry on her mission of a clean and green community for everyone to enjoy.  Allie needs kids that are willing to work hard to cleanup and protect our environment.  Allie can create a fun hands-on project, that will engage and educate.

The Asheville Bag Monster is 500 plastic bags of trouble.  It’s the mission of the Bag Monsters to educate the public about plastic pollution and how that affects our environment.  Before becoming a monster, our Volunteers are educated with up-to-date recycling information as well as the current state of our polluted environment.  We send these bagged monsters out into the public to draw attention to our growing dependance on petroleum based products.  Once we have your attention, please take that opportunity to ask them questions.  Where can I recycle?  What can I recycle?  How can I reduce the amount of plastic I’m using?  What can I reuse safely?  The monsters are great tools to draw attention to plastic pollution, while keeping it fun.

The message: 1 Year, 1 Shopper, 500 Bags.   Don’t feed the Monster!
